Ambassador gives Briefing at Institute for Strategic Studies
On 29th October, His Excellency, Mr Fesseha Shawel Gebre briefed an audience comprised of diplomats, civil servants, researchers and members at the International Institute of Strategic Studies (IISS) in London.
Organised under the Africa Sessions of the Conflict, Security and Development Programme at the Institute, the Ambassador led a briefing, chaired by Dr Andrew Tchie, Research Fellow and Editor of the Armed Conflict Database, on Ethiopia’s domestic reforms and priorities in the Horn of Africa.
The Ambassador began by highlighting the recent awarding of the Nobel Peace Prize to Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, confirming it as clear recognition of the success of the ongoing reforms he is leading. He followed this by discussing the importance of overcoming the current challenges facing these reforms before providing a brief overview of Ethiopia’s strategic priorities in the Region.
The Briefing closed with a question and answer session, which covered a range of topics including: the Prime Minister’s mediation of the Sudan crisis; the challenges to the formation of a Government of National Unity in South Sudan; engagements with Egypt and Sudan over the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam; and preparations for the 2020 national elections in Ethiopia.
