Statement from the Prime Minister’s Office following the awarding of the 2019 Nobel Peace Prize
Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed is deeply honoured and humbled by the recognition of the Nobel Committee. The award is both a source of great pride and inspiration both in Ethiopia and the broader region. The Prize will give a significant boost to the Prime Minister’s deep commitment to the twin goals of peace and development in Ethiopia and the entire continent.
Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed also wants to extend his congratulations to the Nobel Committee and the Norwegian people for the extremely important work they are doing to highlight the cause of peace, justice and human dignity around the world.
In receiving the award, the Prime Minister recognised that the road ahead is fraught with enormous challenges and expectations. The Prime Minister is receiving this award at a time when Ethiopia is gripped by momentous changes of unprecedented scale and magnitude. The immense task of building a pluralistic democracy based on respect for basic human rights and the rule of law has begun in earnest.
Our problems are far from resolved. But with Medemer as our guiding philosophy, we are determined to ensure Ethiopians are free from fear and want, that their hearts and borders remain open to new ideas and opportunities, and that, together, they shall overcome.
The Prime Minister would like to take this opportunity to express his gratitude to the Nobel Committee for this extraordinary honour and reaffirms his commitment to upholding the ideals of the Nobel Prize throughout his term in office and beyond.
