Ethiopian Origin ID card

 

If you are a foreign national of Ethiopian origin, you may apply for an Ethiopian-origin ID card.

 

All applications must be made in person at the Embassy as you will be required to provide fingerprints. You do not require an appointment to submit your application.

 

If you wish to add children (under 18) to your ID card, you must present two copies of a legal document showing your relations, i.e. legalised Birth certificate.

The form must be completed in BLOCK CAPITAL letters in either blue or black ink.

You must:

  • Complete the form to the best of your ability, answering all the required questions clearly. Your application may not be processed if you fail to provide all necessary information
  • Sign and date the form, where asked

2. Gather the required documents

You are required to submit the following documents in support of your application.

  • Two copies of the completed Ethiopian Origin ID card application form.

    Two copies of the completed Ethiopian Origin ID card application form.

  • Two copies of your passport.

    Two copies of your passport from the country of naturalisation.

    Your passport must be valid at least for 6 months.

    Please note that we cannot process your application unless you submit a valid passport.

  • Three passport-sized recent colour photographs.

    Three passport-sized recent colour photographs (with white background).

    The photograph should be full face without sunglasses, hat or other head covering unless for ethnic or religious reasons.

    Please write your name on the back of the photograph in BLOCK CAPITAL letters.

    Please note that we may not accept photographs that do not meet these specifications.

  • Two copies of a supporting document showing that you are of Ethiopian origin. One or more of the following documents is acceptable:

    If you held a manual Ethiopian Passport (Blue), please submit two copies (make sure to attach the pages that contain your biometric information such as your name, your picture, date of issue and expiration date of the passport) and two copies of your Birth certificate, authenticated by the Ethiopian Ministry of Foreign Affairs; or

    If your held a machine-readable Ethiopian Passport (Burgandy), please submit two copies (make sure to attach the pages that contain your biometric information such as your name, your picture, date of issue and expiration date of the passport); or

    Two copies of your Birth Certificate, authenticated by the Ethiopian Ministry of Foreign Affairs; or

    Two copies of a Court document authenticated by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs showing that you are the legal inheritor. The inheritor should be the son/daughter of biological parents who are/were Ethiopians; or

    Two copies of adoption court document. The document must be authenticated by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and must show that the adoptee was given to the adopter by the Ethiopian parents and the adoptee was an Ethiopian at the time of the adoption; or

    Two copies of a court document showing Ethiopian origin. The document must be authenticated by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs; or

    Two copies of a court document showing that one of your parents or grandparents were Ethiopians. The document must be authenticated by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

  • Any other documents, if applicable, in support of your application

Fees and Payment

3. Fees and payment.

The correct fee must be enclosed with your application.

The Consular Section only accepts credit and debit card payments for all Consular Services. Payments by cash, postal orders or banker’s draft are no longer accepted.

Payment by cheque or any means other than those stated above, cannot be accepted. We do not accept cash.
The processing fee is non-refundable.

4. Submitting your application to the Embassy

All applications must be made in person at the Embassy as you will be required to provide fingerprints.

You may submit your application at any time during the Consular Section’s working hours. See the opening hours for further information.

You do not require an appointment to submit your application

If you wish to add children (under 18) to your ID card, you will be required to present two copies of a legal document showing your relationship (i.e. a legalised Birth certificate).

Please make sure that you bring all the required documents.

 

Please note that…

  • The ID Card processing fee is non-refundable
  • Paperwork submitted in a manner different from the above will not be accepted
  • ID card processing starts only after we have collected all necessary documents (original with two copies) and payments

5. Processing times and return of I.D.

As Ethiopian I.D. cards are issued in Ethiopia, please be aware that it may take up to three months to process your application. 

The Consular Section will notify you when your ID card has been issued.

All applicants are required to collect their ID cards in person at the Consular Section.
