Former Ethiopian president H.E. Girma Woldegiorgis died on 14th December 2018, just two weeks short of his 95th birthday. A state funeral was held in his honour on 19th December at the Holy Trinity Cathedral in Addis Ababa, in the presence of high-level Ethiopian and foreign dignitaries.

Ethiopia’s new President, H.E. Sahle-Work Zewde, is ranked Number 97 on Forbes’ 2018 World's 100 Most Powerful Women list, and is the only African. In October 2018, Ms Zewde became Ethiopia's first female president and is currently the only serving female head of state in Africa.
