Scottish photographer’s Ethiopia photos shortlisted for top Photography Award
Award-winning photographer, Kieran Dodds‘ extensive work on the church forests of Ethiopia has been shortlisted for the prestigious Sony World Photography Award in the Professional – Landscape category.
His series, ‘Hierotopia’, explores the forests surrounding churches in Ethiopia, where farming has led to huge deforestation, and how priests, scientists and the local community are trying to save them.
In an interview with The Scotsman, Kieran said: “My personal work considers the role of the environment in human culture and at how indigenous ideas have preserved the environment and seeing how this can be scaled up.”
“In Ethiopia I stumbled across something remarkable where Orthodox Christians preserve the environment, seeing it as the ‘clothes of the church’ – a physical part of the church building and a miniature Garden of Eden.”
Kieran’s work will be displayed at the Sony World Photography Awards Exhibition at Somerset House in London from 18thApril until 6thMay, before embarking on an international tour. Award winners will be revealed on 17thApril
