The Embassy of Ethiopia would like to reiterate the Government’s enduring commitment to rebuild and rehabilitate the Tigray Region by ensuring that urgent humanitarian needs are addressed. The Embassy appeals to the international community and development partners to stand with Ethiopia at this critical time by helping augment the Government’s lifesaving efforts.

The Embassy remains deeply concerned at reports of alleged human rights violations in Tigray and condemns, in the strongest terms, any acts of violence directed towards civilians. The Government of Ethiopia is committed to thoroughly investigating these very serious allegations and bringing the perpetrators to justice.

The Embassy of Ethiopia rejects, in the strongest terms, dangerous allegations of an ongoing “campaign of genocide” and “ethnic cleansing” in the Tigray Region. Such unsubstantiated allegations neither secure justice for the victims of these alleged crimes nor do they ensure accountability from perpetrators.

The Embassy remains deeply concerned by allegations of the use of “rape as an instrument of war”. The Government maintains a zero-tolerance policy towards rape and sexual violence, which constitute grave violations of human rights, and is treating these allegations with the utmost seriousness.

Following the announcement that Ethiopia will be added to the UK Government's 'red list' from 4:00 am on Friday, 19 March 2021, Ethiopian Airlines has made necessary adjustments to its UK (Heathrow and Manchester) operations until further notice.

The Royal African Society hosted a panel discussion on Judicial Reform and the Rule of Law in Ethiopia. Panellists at the virtual event discussed the state of implementation of these reforms, and particularly the challenges to the rule of law and its implementation created by the crisis in Tigray in recent months and the events and actions that this has precipitated.
